Mitchell County Hospital Auxiliary is celebrating its 45th Anniversary in May of 2011.  The organization as it is today, started with a small group of women and has grown to over 500 inactive members and 80 active volunteers.  They meet twice a year, the first Monday in April and October.

Volunteer hours are spent in the lobby reception area as a pink lady, the surgery waiting room, Snack Bar and Gift Shop at the hospital, and in the Economy Shop located at the Beloit Municipal Building.

Auxiliary Volunteer

 Nurses Station funded by Auxiliary

Each fall a Doll Clinic is given by the auxiliary and hospital staff.  Around 150 kindergartners and first graders from Beloit, St. John’s, Tipton, Lakeside Elementary at Glen Elder and Downs, Glasco, Jewell and Sylvan Grove schools are given a tour of the hospital, including the Emergency Room, Radiology, Nursery, Patient Room, and other various departments.  Each student receives a hand washing lesson and a visit with “Smokey Sue” on the dangers of smoking.  The Mitchell County EMS also provides information about the ambulance, the importance of road courtesy for the ambulance, and

a ride with samples of each siren sound and all flashing lights.  This program has had repeated demonstrations of more relaxed children when he/she does have to visit the hospital or visits a relative in the hospital.  Over 7,500 hours are donated to these projects each year.

The Economy Shop brings in a profit of over $30,000 each year, thanks to the generosity of the citizens of Mitchell and Jewell County.  The merchandise is all donated, and the shop is staffed by Volunteers.  Money is also made in the Snack Bar and Gift Shop, through membership dues of $1.00 per year, and Memorial donations. Mitchell County Hospital Auxiliary provides funds to Long Term Care each month for entertainment for the residents, upkeep for the aviary, and $2,000 for scholarships to area students who are pursuing a medical career.

Economy Shop

Each year, a new project is donated to the hospital.  Past projects have been remodeling of the main and Long Term Care lobbies and main dining room-including new furniture for each of those areas; automatic doors in the main lobby, Out Patient department entrance and into Surgery; a new exhaust system for surgery; new carpet in the main lobby; remodeling of all the nurses stations in Acute Care and Long Term Care; new charts and racks for Acute and Long term Care; new food delivery system which keeps the food hot or cold as needed; and remodeling of the front reception area.

 Economy Shop

Recently new televisions and bedside tables for the patient rooms in the Acute area and Long Term Care were provided, presentation equipment for educational programs, nutrition and hydration cart for Long Term Care, resuscitation manikens, and carts for the Emergency Room. The new surgery unit in 2004 received $100,000 donation from the Auxiliary for a new anesthesia machine and monitors.  These and many other projects have been paid for by the money made in the Economy Shop, Snack Bar, and Gift Shop.

The hospital auxiliary has not only donated monetary items to the hospital throughout the years, but the most important donations are the volunteer hours by many throughout the Mitchell and Jewell County.  We have volunteers from all over the area; Beloit, Tipton, Hunter, Glen Elder, Cawker City, Jewell, and Simpson.
